    =========
    Luxury

    Why is this highly sought after yak down considered a luxury yarn?
    Softness and rarity..

    Because the exceptionally soft undercoat or down is made up of fibers from 18 -20 microns , and because, yak down is similar to qiviut in rarity.

    Its easy to confuse Yak downs' luxurious hand feel with cashmere. That's because the ultrafine and soft down fibers that help yaks survive so well during the winter months. Yaks survive in some of the coldest climates on the planet because Nature has given them a remarkably warm wool coat.

    =========
    Harvesting Sustainability

    Just like special small-farm hand raised natural food, the Yak down is gathered by hand by nomads in the Himalayas, as the animals shed their undercoat naturally..
    The yaks eat wild plants found only at high altitudes and the
    women who gather the yak down benefit directly . The income allows them to
    improve well-being while maintaining sustainable rural lifestyles.

    The long (coarse) guard hairs, which resemble horse hair, are not generally used for yarn.
    This is very similar to Cashmere, as only a small amount of the downy undercoat is used, and each animal yields only about 100 grams per year.

    =========
    Hypoallergenic & Free of itchiness

    There is no lanolin in the downy fiber making it easy to clean and hypoallergenic.
    Unlike sheep's wool, the scales of yak fiber are in a waved mosaic pattern,
    resulting in a very smooth fiber that does not itch.
    The exceptional downy soft qualities of the yak's fiber make it a favorite of knitters, spinners & weavers throughout the world.
    The tiny ringlets you see are referred to as crimp giving the end garment loft, warmth,
    and softness.
